How to Build a Body That Doesn’t Break When Illness Strikes

If you’ve ever felt like one stressful week, one sleepless night, or one little virus completely knocks you out, you are not alone. So many women in midlife feel like their bodies are more fragile than they used to be. But here’s the good news:

Resilience can be built.
And it starts long before illness shows up.

For the past two decades, I’ve used them inside my own home with my five kids. What I’ve seen—over and over—is that when you nourish your body, support your nervous system, and give your cells what they need, your body becomes stronger, steadier, and far more capable.

Let’s walk through the basics.

1. Food First: Is Your Diet Medicine or Poison?

Hippocrates said it best: “Let food be thy medicine.”
Every time you eat, you are either giving your body information that heals… or information that inflames.

A simple rule of thumb:

  • God-made = healing

  • Man-made = confusing or inflammatory

There are exceptions—some God-made foods still cause inflammation depending on your personal biochemistry. This is where functional labs come in, which is why I run GI-MAP and DUTCH hormone testing on my clients. But as a starting point, choose simple, whole, nourishing foods that help your body feel safe.

2. Build a Resilient Life

Resilience isn’t about pushing harder.
It’s about creating rhythms that support your hormones, immune system, and nervous system.

A few foundations:

  • Aim for 7–9 hours of sleep

  • Walk daily and move your body

  • Practice deep breathing to shift out of stress mode

  • Drink half your bodyweight in water

  • Limit the noise—social media, news, constant negativity

  • Surround yourself with people who make your body feel safe, not stressed

  • Keep simple morning and evening rhythms

These small, consistent practices lower inflammation and increase your capacity to handle life—and illness—when it hits.

3. Stock a Simple, Natural Medicine Cabinet

You don’t want to begin supporting your body when you’re already sick—you want to start at the first sign of feeling off: fatigue, brain fog, tension in the chest, or that familiar “something’s coming.”

Here’s what I keep on hand year-round:

  • Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Zinc, Probiotic

  • B Propolis throat spray

  • Activated charcoal for stomach upset

  • doTERRA On Guard, Breathe, Oregano, Peppermint, Lavender
